If you’re jumping into PvP and wondering how to gear up properly, you’re not alone. I’ve had to explain this to returning friends, confused guildmates, and even players with solid PvE gear who still get crushed in battlegrounds. PvP gearing in WoW works differently than PvE, and understanding the system will save you a lot of frustration.
This guide covers the basics of gearing for PvP in Dragonflight and beyond, based on what I’ve tested myself — nothing here is theory or guesswork.
Step 1: Start With Honor Gear
If you’re starting fresh or playing an alt, the first step is getting Honor gear. You can buy this gear from PvP vendors in Valdrakken or Stormwind/Orgrimmar (depending on your faction).
- Cost: Honor Points
- Item Level: Lower in PvE, but scales up in PvP combat
- Upgrade Levels: You can upgrade it with more Honor as you earn it
Why it matters:
Honor gear isn’t great in dungeons, but in PvP, it scales up to a competitive item level when you’re inside battlegrounds, arenas, or war mode. This means even fresh characters can be useful fast — without farming raid loot.
Tip: Focus on weapons and trinkets first. They give the biggest stat increases early.
Step 2: Upgrade with Honor
You can upgrade your Honor gear multiple times — each level costs more Honor. The upgrade NPCs are located near the PvP vendors.
What upgrades do:
- In PvE: Increase base item level
- In PvP: PvP item level stays the same, but upgrades give small stat increases
How to earn Honor fast:
- Random battlegrounds
- Solo shuffle
- Battleground brawls
- War mode world quests
Stick to the content you enjoy most — all of it gives Honor.
Step 3: Earn Conquest Gear
Conquest gear is your endgame PvP set. You earn Conquest Points by participating in rated content: 2v2, 3v3, Rated Battlegrounds, and Solo Shuffle.
- Conquest Cap: Weekly limit that increases every reset
- Item Level: Starts higher than Honor gear and scales up in PvP
- Upgrades: Unlocked based on your personal PvP rating
How to spend Conquest wisely:
Start with weapons or a 2-piece bonus if your class relies on tier. After that, go for set pieces, trinkets, and then fill in the rest.
Step 4: PvP Set Bonuses and Trinket Bonuses
Set Bonuses:
You get PvP set bonuses just like in PvE — usually tied to 2-piece and 4-piece combinations. These are important for burst classes, healers, and specs with cooldown-based windows.
Trinket Bonus (2-set):
Using two PvP trinkets (like the Medallion + Badge or Emblem) gives you a special bonus: Increased primary stat and stamina. Always run a PvP trinket pair for maximum benefit.
Recommended PvP Trinket Combos:
- DPS: Medallion + Badge
- Healer: Medallion + Emblem
- Tank or hybrid: Depends on your comp — mix based on survivability
Step 5: Weekly PvP Vault
If you do rated PvP each week, you’ll unlock a reward in the Great Vault (in Valdrakken). The higher your rating and number of wins, the better your reward options.
- 1 slot: Win 1 rated match
- 2 slots: Win 4 rated matches
- 3 slots: Win 8 rated matches
Always check the vault each week — it’s one of the best ways to upgrade gear without extra Conquest spending.
What About PvE Gear in PvP?
PvE gear can still be useful — especially trinkets or tier pieces — but most PvE gear does not scale up in PvP and often puts you at a disadvantage. Some effects are nerfed or disabled entirely in PvP combat.
Bottom line:
You can start with PvE gear if that’s all you have, but swap to PvP gear as soon as possible — especially for ranked play.
Fast Gearing Tips (Based on My Own Testing)
- Use Solo Shuffle for fast Conquest and Honor gains
- Cap Conquest every week to stay on track
- Always run double PvP trinkets
- Don’t upgrade gear you plan to replace — save Honor
- Watch your rating if you want to unlock higher gear upgrades
